Average order value is one of the fastest ways to grow revenue, because you earn more from shoppers you already have. You do not need extra traffic. You help each cart grow a little. This page explains what AOV is, how to work it out, and seven proven ways to lift it.

What is average order value (AOV)?

Average order value is the average amount a customer spends in one order. Your store revenue comes from three things: how many people visit, how many of them buy, and how much each buyer spends. AOV is that last part, and it is often the easiest to improve.

A higher AOV also makes the rest of your business easier. Each order covers more of your shipping, packing, and ad costs, so more of the sale is profit.

The average order value formula

AOV = Total revenue ÷ Total number of orders Use the same time period for both numbers. If you use last month for revenue, use last month for orders too.

That is the whole formula. You only need two numbers from any time period you want to check.

Average order value example

Say your store made $20,000 last month from 400 orders.

AOV = $20,000 ÷ 400 = $50

So the average shopper spent $50 per order. If you lift that to $58, the same 400 orders bring in $23,200. That is $3,200 more in a month from the same traffic.

How to use this AOV calculator

  1. Enter your monthly orders.
  2. Enter your current AOV. If you are not sure, divide last month revenue by last month orders.
  3. Drag the slider to a target lift, like 15%.
  4. Read the extra revenue you would earn each month and each year.

The calculator does the math live, so you can try different targets and see what each one is worth.

Where to find your AOV on Shopify

You can pull your real numbers straight from your store:

  • Open your Shopify admin.
  • Go to Analytics, then Reports.
  • Find the average order value report and pick the date range you want.

What is a good average order value?

There is no single good number. It depends on what you sell and your prices. A jewelry store and a coffee brand will look very different, and both can be healthy.

The best benchmark is your own store over time. If your AOV climbs month over month, your offers are working. That trend matters more than any outside average.

7 ways to increase your average order value

Here are proven ways to lift AOV. Most work best in the cart and at checkout, where the shopper is already ready to buy. Pick the two or three that fit your store, then add more as you grow.

1Add a free shipping bar

Set a free shipping goal a little above your current AOV. Then show a progress bar in the cart so shoppers can see how close they are. A line like "Add $15 more for free shipping" pulls carts higher, and free shipping feels better to shoppers than the same amount taken off the price.

Oxify Cart Drawer adds this free shipping bar and updates it live as the cart changes.

2Show cart upsells and cross-sells

Suggest one matching product right inside the cart, like a refill or a useful add-on. Keep it to a single clear offer. Too many choices slow the shopper down and lower the chance they add anything.

Oxify Cart Drawer shows these upsells in a slide cart with one tap to add.

3Add frequently bought together

Group items that people often buy as a set, so shoppers find the rest of what they need in one place. This is a gentle nudge, not a hard sell, and it fits the way people already shop.

Oxify Cart Drawer includes frequently bought together and AI recommendations, so the picks stay relevant.

4Build product bundles

Bundles change the question from "should I buy this?" to "which set is the best deal?" They lift order size without a deep discount. Use a small saving to reward the bigger cart, not a large one that eats your margin.

Oxify Quantity Breaks lets you build fixed bundles and build your own bundles, and it is the most complete bundle tool for this job.

5Offer quantity breaks and volume discounts

Give a better unit price when shoppers buy more. This works well for refills, basics, and gifts. Show the saving clearly, like "Buy 3, save 15%," so the value is easy to see.

Oxify Quantity Breaks adds tiered pricing and volume discounts with a clear savings display.

6Run BOGO and free gift offers

Buy one get one deals and free gift offers give a reason to add more. A free gift at a spend goal works much like free shipping. It rewards the bigger cart and feels generous.

Both Oxify Cart Drawer and Oxify Quantity Breaks support BOGO and free gifts.

7Use post-purchase upsells

Offer one more item right after checkout, in a single click. The shopper has already paid, so there is no risk to the first sale. It is one of the safest ways to add a little more to each order.

Oxify Cart Drawer includes post-purchase upsells you can turn on quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average order value formula?

AOV equals total revenue divided by total number of orders. Use the same time period for both numbers so the result is accurate.

How do I find my AOV on Shopify?

Open your Shopify admin, go to Analytics, then Reports, and find the average order value report. Pick the date range you want to review.

What is a good average order value?

It depends on your products and prices, so there is no single right number. The best test is your own store over time. A rising AOV means your offers are working.

How can I increase my average order value?

Use a free shipping bar, cart upsells, frequently bought together, product bundles, quantity breaks, BOGO, and post-purchase upsells. Start with the two or three that fit your store best.

Why is AOV important?

A higher AOV grows revenue from buyers you already have, with no extra ad spend. It also helps cover shipping and acquisition costs, because each order pays for more.

Does a higher AOV always mean more profit?

Not always. If you push order size with deep discounts, profit can fall. Aim to add value with bundles, add-ons, and gifts instead of cutting prices.
