Best Shopify Apps for Pet Stores: Upsells, Bundles & Subscriptions

The best Shopify apps for pet stores cover five jobs: autoship for food that runs out (Appstle or Recharge), a cart that suggests treats (Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell, our app), treat boxes and multi-packs (Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB, our app, Kefi, or Kaching), reviews (Judge.me or Okendo), and email (Klaviyo).

We checked 49 pet brands on Shopify: 34 run Klaviyo, 34 run a review app, and about half run a named subscription app. Before you choose, work out how many days a bag lasts for each dog. A 15-pound bag lasts about 68 days for a 10-pound dog and 21 days for a 50-pound dog, so one "every 30 days" autoship fits neither.

Meet Jo and Priya. Jo has a 10-pound terrier mix. Priya has a 50-pound lab. Both buy a 15-pound bag of Hill's Science Diet adult dry food on the same day. Jo's bag lasts about 68 days. Priya's lasts about 21. If your autoship says "every 30 days," Jo gets food she does not need yet, and Priya runs out nine days early and buys a bag somewhere else.

We build Shopify apps, and we read the public code of 49 real pet brands on Shopify to see what they run. This guide gives you that data, the run-out math, our picks, live prices, and the rules most app lists skip. It is written for US pet stores, so prices are in US dollars and the rules and shipping limits are American.

Best Shopify apps for pet stores: upsells, bundles, and subscriptions, October 2026

Short answer (checked October 6, 2026):

  1. Bigger orders: Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell (our app, 4.9 stars from 40 reviews, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month): treat and toy add-ons, an autoship upgrade, a free-gift goal, and one-click offers after checkout.
  2. Autoship: Appstle (5.0 stars from 8,932 reviews, free to $500 a month in subscription sales) or Recharge, which was on 16 of the 49 brands we checked.
  3. Treat boxes and multi-packs: Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app, $14.99 a month), Kefi, or Kaching Bundles. Keep heavy food bags out of big quantity breaks.
  4. Reviews and email: Judge.me or Okendo and Klaviyo (on 34 of 49 brands).
  5. Check first: the run-out clock for your autoship timing, and the pet rules on food registration, pet medicine, and autoship law.

Who we are and how we picked:

  • We make Oxify, so two apps on this list are ours. We rank Oxify first for one job, raising order value, and we say where other apps beat it.
  • Every rating, review count, badge, and price comes from the live App Store listing, read on October 6, 2026.
  • Rules and statistics name their source. Where something is our own math, we say so.
  • This guide is for online pet brands that sell food, treats, and supplies. If you also run a physical pet store, you will want point-of-sale, local-inventory, and grooming-booking tools, which are not covered here. If you sell personalized or dropshipped pet gear, that is a different job too.

Why Pet Stores Need Different Apps

  • Pet food is the biggest part of the market. The American Pet Products Association (APPA) says US pet spending reached $158 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit $165 billion in 2026. Food and treats were $68.3 billion of it, about 43% (APPA; the 43% is our math).
  • Autoship is the model to beat. Chewy says purchases by its Autoship customers were 83.3% of its $12.6 billion in net sales for the year ended February 1, 2026, up from 76.2% two years earlier. That counts everything Autoship customers buy, not only scheduled orders (Chewy 10-K).
  • Food runs out by weight, pets change, and bags are heavy. A small dog and a big dog empty the same bag at very different speeds, a puppy becomes an adult, and a 45-pound bag changes your shipping.

The Run-Out Clock: How Long Does a Bag of Pet Food Last?

Every autoship, refill email, and quantity break depends on one number: the days a bag lasts. Here is the formula.

Days per bag = pounds in the bag × 453.6 ÷ grams fed each day.

We used the adult feeding table on Hill's own Science Diet Adult Small Bites page, which lists the daily amount by dog weight. These are adult maintenance amounts, and Hill's says to adjust them to keep a healthy weight. The bags come in 15 and 45 pounds.

Dog weightFed per day15 lb bag lasts45 lb bag lasts
5 lb dog60 g113 days340 days
10 lb dog100 g68 days204 days
20 lb dog165 g41 days124 days
30 lb dog225 g30 days91 days
40 lb dog265 g26 days77 days
50 lb dog320 g21 days64 days
60 lb dog365 g19 days56 days
80 lb dog445 g15 days46 days
100 lb dog530 g13 days39 days

Source: Hill's Adult Small Bites feeding table. The days are our math. The Adult Large Breed table gives the same amounts for 50 and 100 pound dogs. A flat "every 30 days" fits only a 30-pound dog on a 15-pound bag.

Cats are slower. Using Hill's Indoor Cat table, a 10-pound cat eats about 70 grams a day (¾ cup). A 7-pound bag lasts about 45 days, and a 15.5-pound bag lasts about 100.

What the clock tells your apps:

  • One autoship cycle does not fit all. Ask for the pet's weight at signup, and set the cycle from it.
  • Refill reminders: send the first one at about 80% of the days. That is around day 54 for a 68-day bag, and around day 17 for a 21-day bag.
  • Treats and a second pet shorten the clock. The tables are for food alone. Ask "How many pets eat this?"
  • Cups per pound is not 4. Hill's lists Small Bites at 365 kcal per cup and 3,683 kcal per kilogram. That works out to about 4.6 cups per pound (our math), so the "4 cups a pound" rule of thumb is off by roughly 13%.

Can a Shopify app set autoship by dog weight?

We did not find an app that lists weight-based intervals as a feature. Here is what you can do today (our suggestions, so test them in your app before launch):

  • Sell each weight band as its own variant, such as "under 20 lb," "20 to 50 lb," and "over 50 lb," and give each its own delivery cycle.
  • Ask weight in a quiz, then send the shopper to the right variant and plan.
  • Ask the vendor whether the portal lets a customer change the cycle and swap the product themselves. See the autoship matrix.

Puppies grow up: why autoship needs a swap rule

  • The puppy stage ends with growth, not a date. The American Animal Hospital Association says it runs from birth to the end of rapid growth, about 6 to 9 months and varying by breed and size. Senior dogs are in the last 25% of their estimated life (AAHA).
  • The food switch depends on size. Hill's says the move from puppy to adult food comes at 9 to 12 months for small breeds, about 12 for medium, 12 to 15 for large, and about 18 for giant breeds.
  • The switch takes a week. Hill's suggests a 7-day mix, starting at 75% puppy food on days one and two, and only adult food from day seven (Hill's).

So a plain calendar autoship will keep sending puppy food. Look for an app that can swap one product for another on a rule, and ask the owner for the pet's birthday and size class. Seal's free plan lists "product swaps and automations," for example.

What Real Pet Brands Run on Shopify (We Checked 49 Stores)

Most app lists guess. We looked. On October 6, 2026, we loaded the homepage and one product page of 68 well-known pet food, treat, toy, and gear brands. 63 loaded, and 49 of those run on Shopify.

How we scanned, and what we cannot see:

  • We counted an app only when its Shopify app block (it looks like shopify://apps/okendo/blocks/...) or its own script domain showed up in the page code.
  • We cannot see apps that load only in the cart, at checkout, or on pages we did not open. A tool in the code is not proof it is switched on. Read every number as "at least."
  • The rows under a group can add up to more than the group, because a few stores run two apps.

What stands out:

  • Klaviyo and reviews lead. 34 of 49 stores load each.
  • Autoship is common, but not universal. 24 of 49 stores (49%) had a named subscription app. That is lower than the 68% we found in coffee and tea and the 58% in beauty. Recharge led with 16.
  • Few pet brands use a bundle or free-gift app. Only 3 of 49 loaded a bundle app and 4 a free-gift app. Treat bundles look like an open lane, though big brands may build theirs by hand.
  • Quizzes are rare. Only 4 of 49 load a quiz tool, even though "which food is right for my dog" is a natural quiz. None of the 49 run Oxify yet. Rebuy ran on 14.

One more data point. The tool Store Leads counts 78,534 live Shopify stores in Pets & Animals (October 2, 2026). Judge.me is on 26.0% of them and Klaviyo on 15.5%. Loox is on about 6.7%, and none of the big subscription apps appear in the top ten (Store Leads; some percentages are our math). Most small pet stores run reviews and email only. Bigger brands add autoship and personalization.

A wider check, separate from this one. On October 11, 2026 we also ran a broader storefront check: 475 live Shopify stores in 10 verticals (45 of them pet supply stores), with its own sample and its own list of 30 tracked apps. Its counts are not comparable with the 49-store counts on this page, so read each on its own. The method and tables are in our October 2026 check of 475 live Shopify stores.

1. Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell: Best for Bigger Pet Orders (Our Pick)

4.9 stars from 40 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Yes, it is our app. Here is why we put it first for pet stores, and where it is not the right fit.

Autoship keeps customers coming back, but it does not make today's order bigger. A shopper with a bag of food in the cart is already thinking about the dog, so the cart is the best moment to show the treats, the chew toy, or the autoship price. For the how-to, see how to add a cart drawer upsell on Shopify.

The pet offers it runs:

  • Treat and toy add-ons in the cart drawer. Show a dental chew next to the food, or a litter scoop next to the litter. Light add-ons barely change your shipping cost. Pick the products by hand, or use Shopify's "complementary" recommendations. See cross-sell and recommendation apps.
  • Autoship upgrade on the cart line. One tap turns a one-time bag into an autoship plan. It works with Shopify subscription apps such as Recharge, Appstle, Skio, and Seal, so it works alongside the autoship app you pick. See subscribe and save inside the cart drawer.
  • A free-shipping goal and a free-gift goal. "Add $14 more for free shipping." "Spend $60 and get a free toy." The gift is added automatically, and goals can be set per market. See adding a free shipping bar to the cart drawer.
  • Offers after checkout. A post-purchase offer can add a treat bag in one click, and checkout upsells are available on Shopify Plus. See post-purchase upsell apps.

  • Where others win: Rebuy ran on 14 of the 49 pet brands we checked, and it also covers search and A/B-tested flows. Selleasy and Kaching Bundles have far more reviews than our apps.
  • Skip it if: you only want autoship and never plan to upsell. Oxify does not run reviews or email.

Best Autoship and Subscription Apps for Pet Stores

Autoship fits pets because food never stops. 24 of the 49 brands we checked (49%) run a named subscription app. A good pet autoship needs these jobs done:

  • Cycles set by the run-out clock, with the pet's weight asked at signup.
  • Product swaps for puppy to adult, adult to senior, or a new flavor, without cancelling.
  • Skip, pause, and change, plus a bulk skip so a recalled product can be paused for every subscriber at once.
  • Failed-payment recovery and a cancel flow, so a lapsed card does not end the plan.
  • A gateway the app supports. The Shopify Subscriptions app works with Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, and Stripe for select merchants (Shopify Help Center).

What each listing says about the jobs that keep subscribers

We read the plan cards on each live listing. "Not listed" means the plan card did not mention it, not that the app cannot do it. Ask the vendor before you decide.

2. Appstle Subscriptions: best for most pet stores

5.0 stars from 8,932 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Free up to $500 a month in subscriptions, then $10 (to $5,000), $30 (to $15,000), and higher plans after that, with 0% transaction fees on paid plans. It ran on 1 of the 49 brands we checked. Bigger brands favor Recharge.

3. Recharge: larger brands with many tools

4.8 stars from 3,127 reviews. No Built for Shopify badge. See the listing. $25 a month for your first 50 subscribers with no transaction fees. Starter is $99 a month plus 1.49% and 19¢ per transaction, and Plus is $499 plus 1.34% and 19¢. 60-day free trial. It was the most common subscription app in our scan, on 16 of 49 pet brands (33%). The percent fee grows with every sale.

4. Seal, Loop, Skio, and more

  • Seal (4.9 stars from 3,126 reviews, Built for Shopify): free for up to 50 subscriptions, with product swaps on the free plan. Paid plans start at $5.95 a month. See the listing.
  • Loop (5.0 stars from 779 reviews): free for 50 active subscriptions, then $99 a month plus 1%. See the listing.
  • Skio (5.0 stars from 242 reviews): now "Skio, a Recharge Company." The Scale plan is $599 a month plus 1% and 20¢ per transaction. See the listing.
  • Easy Subscriptions (5.0 stars from 214 reviews, Built for Shopify): free for your first 100 lifetime subscription orders, then $39 a month. See the listing.
  • Ordergroove ran on 4 of the 49 stores we checked: BARK, Just Food For Dogs, Vetnique Labs, and Zesty Paws. See the listing.

Is Shopify's free Subscriptions app enough? It has limits. Shopify says "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app," and that a combined listing "can't be added to a product bundle or added as a subscription product" (Shopify Help Center). If you want a subscribable treat box, use a third-party subscription app that supports build-a-box, and test a renewal first. Compare fees at your size in best Shopify subscription apps.

Best Apps for Treat Boxes, Multi-Packs, and Bundles

Treats, toys, and chews are light, and shoppers love variety. That makes them the best fit for bundles. Heavy bags are not. See the heavy-bag section.

  • Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app): 4.9 stars from 13 reviews, Built for Shopify, $14.99 a month with a 14-day trial. Quantity breaks, mix and match, a bundle builder, upsell offers, and free gifts. Good for "build your pet's treat box." See the listing.
  • Kefi Product Bundle Builder: 5.0 stars from 152 reviews, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month for stores up to 50 orders a month. Build-a-box, mix and match, and multi-step bundles. See the listing.
  • Kaching Bundles: 5.0 stars from 6,178 reviews, Built for Shopify, from $14.99 a month. The most-reviewed bundle app we checked. See the listing.
  • BOGOS: 5.0 stars from 4,450 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free for your first 30 orders, then paid plans from $29.99 a month. It ran on 3 of the 49 stores. See the listing.

Pet Profiles and Multi-Pet Homes: Name, Breed, Weight, and Birthday

A pet store knows something a clothing store does not: the customer has a pet with a name. That is gold for email, and for your run-out timing.

  • Klaviyo custom objects. Klaviyo's help center uses a "Pet" object as its example, with fields for microchip ID, name, type (dog or cat), breed, and birthday. It needs at least a paid email plan, and each profile can hold up to 500 records per object (Klaviyo Help Center). That fits a home with more than one pet.
  • Birthday flows. A date-triggered flow can run on a date field in an object. Klaviyo's own example is a "Pet Birthday" flow that sends only for dogs (Klaviyo Help Center).
  • Collect it in a quiz or signup form. Ask for the pet's name, weight, and birthday, then send answers to Klaviyo. For ideas on lists, see email list segmentation.

Multi-pet homes (our suggestions): use one subscription per pet when the foods differ, so each cycle matches that pet's weight. Offer one combined shipment when the products are the same, so the owner pays postage once.

Pet-specific apps exist:

  • Petlytics: Pet Store Marketing (1.5 stars from 3 reviews, $25 a month, on the App Store since 2020) collects pet names, photos, and birthdays and exports pets to CSV. See the listing.
  • Two newer apps had no reviews when we checked, so treat them as pilots: Petify AI – Product Picks and Pet Data Marketing & Birthday.
  • Reorder Reminder Pro (5.0 stars from 1 review) sends automated reorder reminder emails timed to each customer's purchase, and its listing names pet food. See the listing.

5. RevenueHunt: a "which food is right for my dog?" quiz

4.9 stars from 459 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Free up to 100 quiz responses a month, then $39 for 500. Only 4 of the 49 brands we checked load a quiz tool. A quiz that asks for the pet's weight, age, and size can pick the product and set the autoship cycle at the same time. Keep results to food type and life stage, not medical advice.

Best Review Apps for Pet Stores

  • Judge.me: 5.0 stars from 48,044 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free forever, with unlimited reviews and photo and video reviews. Store Leads puts it on 26.0% of all Shopify pet stores. The $15 Awesome plan lets you filter reviews by a custom question, such as dog size. See the listing.
  • Okendo: 4.8 stars from 1,426 reviews, no Built for Shopify badge. Free up to 50 orders a month, then $19 and up. It ran on 11 of the 49 brands, the most of any review app. See the listing.
  • Junip: 4.8 stars from 1,159 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free with unlimited orders and review requests. Custom attributes and filters come with the $79 Growth plan. See the listing.

Tip: add a question about the pet, like size, breed, or age, so the next shopper can find reviews from a dog like theirs. Ask every buyer, and do not hide the bad ones. For the full field, see best Shopify review apps.

Best Email and SMS Apps for Pet Stores

6. Klaviyo: run-out, birthday, and recall emails

4.7 stars from 3,354 reviews. No Built for Shopify badge. See the listing. It was the most common tool in our scan, on 34 of 49 pet brands (69%). Email is free for up to 250 contacts, and SMS is free for up to 150 credits. For the full field, see best email marketing apps for Shopify.

Benchmarks: Klaviyo has no pet category. For Food & Beverage, flows had a 2.46% placed-order rate and campaigns had 0.26% (Klaviyo). Omnisend's Pets & Animals row, from 2025 campaign emails sent by more than 27,000 brands, shows a 30.09% open rate, 0.78% click-through rate, and 0.10% conversion rate (Omnisend).

Three flows every pet store should build:

  1. Run-out reminder. Start when a bag ships. Wait about 80% of the days it lasts for that pet's weight. Send two reminders, then one more after the cycle has passed, with a small extra. Klaviyo's replenishment guide suggests the same shape (Klaviyo).
  2. Birthday. A treat coupon on the pet's birthday.
  3. Life-stage nudge. When a puppy reaches the age for adult food, tell the owner and offer the swap.

Small stores cannot use Klaviyo's "expected next order" prediction yet. It needs at least 500 customers who have placed an order and 180 days of order history (Klaviyo Help Center). Until then, use the run-out clock.

7. Postscript, Smile, and Gorgias

  • Postscript (4.7 stars from 1,207 reviews): free to install, with a $49 monthly minimum spend on the Starter plan. It ran on 4 of the 49 stores, and Attentive on 7. See the listing.
  • Smile (4.9 stars from 4,618 reviews, Built for Shopify): free up to 200 orders a month, then $15. See the listing. See best Shopify loyalty apps.
  • Gorgias (4.3 stars from 704 reviews): the Starter plan is $10 a month for 50 tickets. It ran on 12 of the 49 stores, and it is where recall questions will land. See the listing.

Every pet food seller hopes to never need this. A recall plan takes an afternoon, and it is the kind of thing customers remember you for.

  • What a recall is. FDA says a recall may be started by the company, requested by FDA, or ordered by FDA (FDA animal recalls).
  • How serious it is. FDA sorts recalls into three classes. Class I is a reasonable probability that using the product will cause serious health problems or death. Class II covers temporary or reversible health problems. Class III is not likely to cause health problems (FDA recall definitions).

A simple plan:

  1. Record lot codes when stock arrives. Note the lot code, best-by date, and the day you started selling it, for each product.
  2. Build the list fast. If you know the lot or the date range, make a Klaviyo segment of everyone who bought that product in that window. If you do not know the lot, email everyone who bought that product in the period the supplier gives you.
  3. Stop the next shipment. Check that your subscription app can skip or swap one product for every subscriber at once.
  4. Give support a script. Questions will pour into Gorgias or your inbox on day one.

We found no built-in Shopify lot tracking. Two lot-tracking apps exist, but both are young:

  • Batchly: Lot & Expiry Tracking (5.0 stars from 2 reviews). See the listing.
  • LotTrack: Batch & Lot Tracking (no reviews yet; launched in July 2026). See the listing.

Heavy Bags: Shipping, Free-Shipping Goals, and Quantity Breaks

Hill's sells dog food in 45-pound and 15-pound bags and cat food in 15.5, 7, and 3.5-pound bags. That is a lot of weight to put in a "buy 2, save 10%" offer.

  • USPS Ground Advantage has a 70-pound maximum and a limit of 130 inches for length plus girth (USPS).
  • Two 45-pound bags weigh 90 pounds before the box (our math). That cannot go in one USPS Ground Advantage parcel.

What to do:

  • Cap quantity breaks by weight. Offer "buy 2, save 10%" on treats and cans, not on 45-pound bags.
  • Set your free-shipping goal in dollars. Then test it with your heaviest order.
  • Let a light add-on do the lifting. A bag of treats raises order value without adding much weight.
  • Know your carrier's rules. Ask about weight and size limits and surcharges for heavy parcels, before you promise free shipping.

The Pet Rules Most App Lists Skip

These are checkable rules that touch an online pet store. This is not legal advice.

1. Pet food labels, claims, and state registration

  • FDA does not approve pet food before it is sold. FDA says animal food does not need premarket review unless a substance is a food additive. It must still be safe, made under sanitary conditions, free of harmful substances, and truthfully labeled (FDA).
  • AAFCO does not approve labels either. It says it does not regulate or approve pet food or review a company's label. States have that power. A pet food label has eight required items, including the guaranteed analysis, ingredient statement, nutritional adequacy statement, and feeding directions (AAFCO).
  • "Natural" and "human grade" have definitions. AAFCO says "all natural" is allowed only when every ingredient meets its definition of natural (AAFCO). "Human grade" applies only to the whole product, handled in line with the human-food rules in 21 CFR part 117 (AAFCO).
  • States register pet food. New York says all pet food and treats must be registered before sale, at $100 a year per product, expiring each December 31. You may sell on the internet, but every state has its own rules (New York Agriculture).
  • Maine charges $80 per product name plus a $20 surcharge (Maine Title 7, section 714).
  • What to do: if you make your own food, check each state you ship to. Do not put claims on your product pages that the label and registration do not back up.

2. Prescription pet medicine, flea and tick, and CBD

  • FDA says a pharmacy or website cannot sell a prescription veterinary medicine without a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian, and that US pharmacies must be licensed by their state board of pharmacy (FDA). Do not put prescription pet medicine on an open checkout unless you are a licensed pharmacy.
  • A myth to skip. Some articles mention an "FTC Fairness to Pet Owners Rule." We found no such rule. It is a bill that members of Congress introduced in several sessions between 2011 and 2019, and it never became law (FTC).
  • Flea and tick products are either FDA-approved drugs, with an NADA or ANADA number on the label, or EPA-registered pesticides, with an "EPA Reg. No." (FDA). Show that number, never repackage, and add no claims beyond the label.
  • Shopify says Shopify Payments "doesn't support the sale of hemp, cannabidiol (CBD), and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products" (Shopify Help Center).

3. Autoship law and reviews

  • Autoship is a subscription. Federal law (ROSCA) requires you to disclose all material terms before taking billing details, get express informed consent, and give a simple way to stop the charges (15 U.S.C. 8403). California's AB 2863, in force since July 1, 2025, adds proof of consent for three years, cancelling the same way people signed up, and an annual reminder (Barnes & Thornburg).
  • Click-to-cancel: a court threw out the FTC's 2024 rule on July 8, 2025. In March 2026 the FTC asked for public comment on whether to write a new one, which is an early notice and not a proposed rule. We found no proposed rule as of October 6, 2026 (Federal Register). ROSCA still applies.
  • Reviews: the FTC's reviews rule took effect October 21, 2024. The maximum penalty is $53,088 per violation, and the FTC said in September 2026 that it will keep the 2025 amounts for 2026 (16 CFR 1.98). Ask every buyer for a review, and do not hide the bad ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Shopify apps for pet stores?

Five jobs, five picks. Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell (our app: 4.9 stars, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month) adds treat add-ons and an autoship upgrade in the cart. Appstle or Recharge handle autoship, and Kefi, Kaching, or Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB handle treat boxes. Judge.me or Okendo handle reviews, and Klaviyo handles run-out and birthday emails. Do the run-out math first.

What apps do big pet brands use on Shopify?

We checked 49 pet brands on Shopify on October 6, 2026. Klaviyo ran on 34. 24 had a named subscription app, led by Recharge (16). Rebuy ran on 14, Gorgias on 12, Okendo on 11, and Yotpo on 9. Only 3 loaded a bundle app and 4 a free-gift app. A new store does not need the full stack.

How do I set an autoship interval by dog weight?

Ask for the pet's weight at signup, then use days per bag = pounds in the bag × 453.6 ÷ grams fed per day. Using Hill's feeding table, a 15-pound bag lasts about 113 days for a 5-pound dog, 68 days for 10 pounds, 30 days for 30 pounds, and 21 days for 50 pounds. We found no app that lists weight-based intervals, so sell each weight band as its own variant with its own cycle, and test it first.

Can one customer have separate autoship schedules for two dogs?

Yes, if you use one subscription per pet. That lets each cycle match that pet's weight and food. Use one combined shipment instead when both pets eat the same product, so the owner pays postage once. Klaviyo custom objects can store several pets on one profile.

Can a subscription switch puppy food to adult food automatically?

Only if the app supports product swaps by rule. Hill's says the switch comes at about 9 to 12 months for small breeds and 12 to 15 months for large ones, with a 7-day mix. Ask the customer for the pet's birthday and size class, look for an app with swap rules (Seal's free plan lists product swaps and automations), and email the owner before the swap.

What happens when a pet food autoship payment fails?

It depends on the app. Appstle lists payment retry on its free plan, Recharge lists Failed Payment Recovery, Loop lists dunning with 15 retries, and Skio lists Smart Payment Recovery. Check this before you pick an app, because a lapsed card is one of the easiest ways to lose a subscriber.

Is Shopify's built-in Subscriptions app enough for pet food autoship?

It can work for simple autoship, but it has limits. It supports Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, and Stripe for select merchants, and Shopify says bundles are not compatible with it. For build-a-box, swaps, and cancel flows, look at a third-party app.

Does a cart drawer upsell work with Recharge or Appstle subscriptions?

Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell has a subscribe-and-save upgrade on the cart line that works with Shopify subscription apps such as Recharge, Appstle, Skio, and Seal. Test one full order and one renewal before launch.

Should I put quantity breaks on dog food?

Mostly no on large bags. Two 45-pound bags weigh 90 pounds, and USPS Ground Advantage has a 70-pound maximum. Use quantity breaks on treats, chews, toys, and supplements, and small breaks on canned food and 15-pound bags.

Do I have to register pet food in each state if I only sell online?

Often yes. States set their own rules. New York says all pet food and treats must be registered before sale, at $100 a year per product, and that you may sell on the internet but every state has its own requirements. Maine charges $80 per product name plus a $20 surcharge. Check each state you ship to before you list products there.

Can I sell flea and tick or prescription pet medicine on Shopify?

Flea and tick products are either FDA-approved drugs, with an NADA or ANADA number on the label, or EPA-registered pesticides, with an EPA Reg. No. Show that number, never repackage, and add no claims beyond the label. Prescription pet medicine cannot be sold without a valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian, and the pharmacy must be licensed by its state. There is no "FTC Fairness to Pet Owners Rule." It is a bill that never became law.

How do I email only the customers who bought a recalled lot?

Record lot codes and the date you started selling each lot. Then build a Klaviyo segment of everyone who bought that product in that window. If you do not know the lot, email everyone who bought that product in the period your supplier gives you. Also check that your subscription app can skip the product for every subscriber at once.

What to Do This Week

  1. Today: work out the run-out clock for your two best-selling bag sizes and three pet weights. Write down the days.
  2. This week: set autoship cycles from the clock, and ask for the pet's weight at signup. If you sell your own pet food, check each state's registration rule.
  3. Next: add one treat upsell, a free-shipping goal in dollars, and a build-a-box offer for light products.
  4. Then: write your recall plan, and build the Klaviyo run-out flow. Watch average order value for two weeks, and change one offer at a time.

Want the treat upsells and shipping goal handled? Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell has a 14-day free trial and a 30-day ROI guarantee: if your average order value has not increased within 30 days of going live, we refund 100% of what you paid. Want treat boxes and multi-packs? Try Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB. See how the cart app works on our cart drawer upsell page.
