Best Shopify Apps for Coffee & Tea Brands to Boost AOV

The best Shopify apps for coffee brands, and tea brands too, cover six jobs: bigger orders (Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell, our app), "buy 3, save 10%" quantity breaks (Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB, our app, or Kaching Bundles), subscriptions (Appstle or Recharge), grind-size options (Easify or Qikify), reviews (Judge.me), and refill emails (Klaviyo).

We checked 60 real coffee and tea brands on Shopify, and 41 of them run a subscription app. Before you pick any app, do one piece of math: how many days does your bag last?

Meet Sam, who roasts coffee in a small shop. A 12-ounce bag costs $18. Sam adds a subscription that ships every four weeks. Then Sam does the math. A customer who drinks two 8-ounce cups a day finishes a 12-ounce bag in about 13 days. They run dry for two weeks, and they buy a bag at the grocery store.

The subscription app was never the problem. The default timing was. Coffee and tea are the easiest things on the internet to reorder, and the easiest to lose.

We build Shopify apps, and we read the public code of 60 real coffee and tea brands to see what they run. This guide gives you that data, the bag math, our picks, live prices, and the rules most app lists skip. It is written for US shops, so prices are in US dollars and the rules and shipping rates are American.

Best Shopify apps for coffee and tea brands: the October 2026 app stack

Short answer (checked October 6, 2026):

  1. Bigger orders: Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell (our app, 4.9 stars from 40 reviews, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month): grinder and mug add-ons, a free-shipping goal, a subscribe-and-save upgrade, and a free-gift goal.
  2. "Buy 3, save 10%": Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app, $14.99 a month) or Kaching Bundles (5.0 stars from 6,178 reviews). Size the breaks to how fast beans go stale.
  3. Subscriptions: Appstle (5.0 stars from 8,932 reviews, free to $500 a month in subscription sales) or Recharge, which ran on 22 of the 60 brands we checked.
  4. Grind size without 100 variants: Easify or Qikify Custom Product Options (both 4.9 stars, Built for Shopify, free plans).
  5. Reviews and email: Judge.me (free) and Klaviyo (on 51 of 60 brands).
  6. Check first: your bag clock, and the short list of food rules. FDA's biennial food-facility registration renewal window runs October 1 to December 31, 2026.

Who we are and how we picked:

  • We make Oxify, so two apps on this list are ours. We rank Oxify first for one job, raising order value, and we say where other apps beat it.
  • Every rating, review count, badge, and price comes from the live App Store listing, read on October 6, 2026. We re-read our own two listings on October 11, 2026, and their ratings and review counts had not changed.
  • Rules and statistics name their source. Where something is our own math, we say so.
  • This guide is for brands that sell bags, tins, and boxes online. It is not about café software like point-of-sale or mobile ordering, and it is not about starting a brand from zero (see the box for private-label sellers).

What to skip: "every 4 weeks" for a 12-ounce bag, giant bulk discounts on single-drinker bags, two cart apps at once, and a native Shopify bundle on a subscription.

Why Coffee and Tea Stores Need Different Apps

  • Bags run out fast. A bag is gone in days or weeks, so subscriptions and refill emails pay off more than in most stores.
  • Freshness caps bulk. Coffee is at its best within about three weeks of roasting.
  • One product, many versions. Roast, grind, and bag size multiply fast, and Shopify allows only 3 options per product.
  • Bags are heavy, so the first bag carries most of the shipping cost.
  • Food has rules, and one has a deadline this year.

The Bag Clock: How Long Does a Bag of Coffee Last?

Every offer on this page depends on one number: the days a bag lasts. Most stores guess. Here is how to work it out.

Days a bag lasts = grams in the bag ÷ (grams of coffee per cup × cups a day).

  • The dose. The Specialty Coffee Association's standard test brew uses 55 grams of coffee for every 1 kilogram of water (SCA Standard 310-2021). An 8-ounce cup of water is about 237 grams, so that is roughly 13 grams of coffee per cup (our math).
  • The bag. 12 ounces is 340 grams. 2 pounds is 907 grams. 5 pounds is 2,268 grams.
  • The drinker. The National Coffee Association said in 2025 that coffee drinkers have "nearly 3 cups per day." Daily Coffee News reports that NCA's June 2026 survey averaged 2.6 (Daily Coffee News). Both counts include cups made away from home.
Bag size1 cup a day2 cups a day3 cups a day
12 oz (340 g)26 days13 days9 days
2 lb (907 g)70 days35 days23 days
5 lb (2,268 g)174 days87 days58 days
12 oz with 6-oz cups (about 10 g)34 days17 days11 days

This is our math. The first three rows use 13 grams a cup (an 8-ounce cup), and the last row uses 10 grams for a smaller coffee-maker cup. A household with two drinkers cuts every number in half, and espresso uses more coffee per cup.

Some guides say a 12-ounce bag lasts three to four weeks for a two-cup drinker. That only works with a light dose of about 7 to 8 grams a cup, well under the SCA test dose.

Tea is simpler: a 20-bag box lasts 10 days at two cups a day, since one bag makes one cup.

What the clock tells your apps:

  • Subscription defaults. "Every 4 weeks" fits a one-cup drinker with a 12-ounce bag. A two-cup drinker needs a bag every two weeks. Ask "How many cups a day?" and let shoppers pick a day-based cycle.
  • Refill emails. Send the first reminder at about 80% of the days the bag lasts. For a 12-ounce bag and a two-cup drinker, that is around day 10.
  • Quantity breaks and free shipping. Size them to the freshness window. See quantity breaks.

What Real Coffee and Tea Brands Run on Shopify (We Checked 60 Stores)

Most app lists guess. We looked. On October 6, 2026, we loaded the homepage and one product page of 69 coffee, tea, and functional-drink brands. 67 loaded, and 60 of those run on Shopify.

How we scanned, and what we cannot see:

  • We counted an app only when its Shopify app block (it looks like shopify://apps/klaviyo-email-marketing-sms/blocks/...) or its own script domain showed up in the page code.
  • We cannot see apps that load only in the cart, at checkout, or on pages we did not open. A tool in the code is not proof it is switched on. Read every number as "at least."

What stands out:

  • Coffee and tea ran ahead of beauty and pet on subscriptions. 41 of 60 stores (68%) had a named subscription app. Our beauty scan found 58% and our pet scan found 49%. Recharge led with 22, and Ordergroove was next with 8.
  • Klaviyo is close to universal. 51 of 60 stores load it.
  • Few use a bundle, box, or free-gift app. Only 5 of 60 loaded a bundle or box app, and 1 loaded a free-gift app. Offers like "buy 3, save 10%" may be built by hand, and we cannot see that from the outside.
  • Price testing is common: 17 of 60 stores load a price or page testing tool. None of the 60 run Oxify yet. Rebuy ran on 13.

One more data point. The tool Store Leads counts 43,548 live Shopify stores in Coffee & Tea (October 2, 2026). Judge.me is on 24.2% of them and Klaviyo on 17.8%. Seal is the only subscription app in the top ten, at about 7.6% (Store Leads). Small shops lean on Judge.me, Klaviyo, and Seal. Bigger brands lean on Recharge and Ordergroove.

For a wider view, our October 2026 check of 475 live Shopify stores spans ten verticals and includes 48 coffee and tea stores. It uses a different sample and a fixed list of 30 apps, so its counts are separate from the 60-store scan above.

1. Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell: Best for Bigger Coffee and Tea Orders (Our Pick)

4.9 stars from 40 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Yes, it is our app. Here is why we put it first for coffee and tea stores, and where it is not the right fit.

A subscription app keeps customers coming back, but it does not make today's order bigger. Someone buying beans is already in a "complete my morning" frame of mind, so the cart is the best moment to show the grinder, the second roast, or the subscribe-and-save price. For the how-to, see how to add a cart drawer upsell on Shopify.

The coffee and tea offers it runs:

  • "Complete your brew" add-ons in the cart drawer. Show filters with the beans, a mug with the tea, or a second roast next to the first. Pick the products by hand, or use Shopify's "complementary" recommendations.
  • A free-shipping goal and a free-gift goal. "Add $9 more for free shipping." "Spend $60 and get a free mug." The gift is added automatically, and goals can be set per market. See adding a free shipping bar to the cart drawer.
  • Subscribe-and-save upgrade on the cart line. One tap turns a one-time bag into a refill plan. It works with Shopify subscription apps such as Recharge, Appstle, Skio, and Seal. See subscribe and save inside the cart drawer.
  • Offers after checkout. A post-purchase offer can add a second bag in one click, and checkout upsells are available on Shopify Plus. See post-purchase upsell apps.
Oxify Cart Drawer Product list widget settings showing four product sources: Related, Complementary, Manual, and Recently viewed
The Product list widget in the Oxify admin: one widget, four product sources (October 2026).

Pairing ideas (our examples, not tested rates): beans with filters, a scale, or a grinder; loose-leaf tea with an infuser or a tin; a second roast next to the first. We have no verified numbers on how often shoppers add these, and neither do the guides that quote one. Test your own, and let your dashboard show the answer.

  • Our promise: Cart Drawer & Upsell comes with a 30-day ROI guarantee. If your average order value has not increased within 30 days of going live, we refund 100% of what you paid.
  • Where others win: Rebuy ran on 13 of the 60 brands we checked, and it also covers search and A/B-tested flows. Selleasy and Kaching Bundles have far more reviews than our apps.
  • Skip it if: you only want subscriptions and never plan to upsell. Oxify does not run reviews or email.

Our two apps for coffee and tea stores:

  • Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell: add-ons, shipping and gift goals, subscribe-and-save upgrade, and post-purchase offers. From $9.99 a month, with a 14-day free trial.
  • Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB: "buy 3, save 10%" quantity breaks and build-your-own sampler boxes. $14.99 a month, with a 14-day free trial.

Best Apps for "Buy 3, Save 10%" Quantity Breaks

A store owner might ask: "I run a Shopify coffee store and want to push bigger orders with 'save 10% when you buy 3.' What app shows that on the page?" Here are the apps built for exactly that.

  • Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app): 4.9 stars from 13 reviews, Built for Shopify, $14.99 a month with a 14-day trial. Quantity breaks and volume discounts, mix and match, a bundle builder, upsell offers, and free gifts. See the listing.

  • P: Quantity Breaks & Bundles: 4.9 stars from 264 reviews, Built for Shopify. Has a free plan with 1 active offer. See the listing.
  • Moon Bundles CartDrawer Upsell: 5.0 stars from 664 reviews, Built for Shopify. Has a free plan. See the listing.

Size the ladder to the 3-week freshness window

The Specialty Coffee Association says whole bean coffee "can reasonably be considered 'fresh' within about three weeks of roasting." It also says ground coffee is fresh for about an hour after grinding (SCA, July 2026). Put that next to the bag clock:

  • A solo drinker with two cups a day uses about 1.6 twelve-ounce bags in 21 days, and with three cups about 2.4 bags.
  • A household of two drinkers with two cups each uses about 3.2 bags.
  • A 5-pound bag lasts a two-cup drinker 87 days, more than four times the window.

That is our math, using 13 grams a cup. The lesson: "Buy 3" suits a two-person home, "Buy 2" suits one drinker, and big bulk bags suit cafés and offices. To sell more without stale coffee, pair quantity breaks with a subscription that ships on a schedule.

A worked example with an $18 bag

Say you offer 5% off two bags and 10% off three. Postage uses USPS Ground Advantage commercial rates for Zone 5, effective October 4, 2026 (USPS Notice 123).

OrderPriceUSPS postagePostage as a share of the order
1 bag of 12 oz$18.00$8.24 (under 16 oz)46%
2 bags (5% off)$34.20$10.50 (2 lb)31%
3 bags (10% off)$48.60$12.12 (3 lb)25%

The tiers and the last column are our math, and we assume packaging pushes each order into the tier shown. Your real rates will differ by carrier, zone, box, and Shopify's discounts. But the shape holds: the first bag carries most of the shipping cost, and the second bag adds only $2.26.

  • Put your free-shipping goal at the 2-to-3 bag mark. With an $18 bag, a $45 goal means the third bag ships free. Baymard puts the average cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, and "extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)" is the top reason at 40% (Baymard).
  • Check your margin. Price × bags × (1 − discount) − beans, bag, labor, and postage should still be positive.
  • Weigh a packed order. A bag count that crosses one pound can jump a tier.

Best Apps for Grind Size, Without 100+ Variants

Roast, grind, and bag size multiply fast. Seven grinds, four roasts, and five bag sizes make 140 combinations.

  • The old limit is gone. Shopify used to cap a product at 100 variants. Since October 15, 2025, it allows up to 2,048 (Shopify changelog).
  • A second limit still bites. A product can have only up to three options (Shopify Help Center). Roast, grind, and size use all three.
  • Stock is the bigger problem. Each variant has its own inventory count, so 140 variants mean 140 counts for one roast.
Way to model grindStock countsWatch out

Shopify's cart API lets a store attach a "line item property" to an item. A key that starts with an underscore is hidden from the shopper but stays visible on the order in your admin (Shopify.dev). For grind you want shoppers to see the choice, so leave the underscore off.

Apps that add a grind field:

  • Easify Custom Product Options: 4.9 stars from 3,108 reviews, Built for Shopify, free forever plan. See the listing.
  • Qikify Custom Product Options: 4.9 stars from 940 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free plan, then $19.99 a month for unlimited. See the listing.
  • Variant Option Product Options: 4.7 stars from 635 reviews, Built for Shopify. Its free plan is limited to one product. See the listing.
  • Easify Inventory Sync (4.5 stars from 72 reviews, Built for Shopify) is the tool Easify's own coffee guide uses for the shared-stock method: a base product holds the total ounces, and each size and grind variant deducts from it. See the listing.

Our suggestion: keep roast and bag size as variants so your stock stays honest, and make grind a product page field. For more options apps, see best Shopify product add-ons and options apps. To let shoppers move up a bag size in the cart, see variant upgrade in the cart.

Best Subscription Apps for Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea are the classic subscription products, and the data agrees: 41 of the 60 brands we checked (68%) run a named subscription app. A coffee subscription needs five things:

  • Day-based cycles. Use the bag clock. 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days beat "monthly."
  • Swap and skip. Customers try a new roast, or go on vacation. Let them change it themselves.
  • Failed-payment recovery and a cancel flow, so a lapsed card or a "too much coffee" moment does not end the subscription.
  • Clear consent and easy cancelling. Rules are in the food and subscription rules.
  • A gateway the app supports. Third-party subscription apps work with Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, and Stripe for select merchants (Shopify Help Center).

What each listing says about the jobs that keep subscribers

We read the plan cards on each live listing. "Not listed" means the plan card did not mention it, not that the app cannot do it. Ask the vendor before you decide.

2. Appstle Subscriptions: best for most coffee and tea stores

5.0 stars from 8,932 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Free up to $500 a month in subscriptions, then $10 (to $5,000), $30 (to $15,000), and higher plans after that, with 0% transaction fees on paid plans. It ran on 3 of the 60 brands we checked. Bigger brands favor Recharge.

3. Recharge: larger brands with many tools

4.8 stars from 3,127 reviews. No Built for Shopify badge. See the listing. $25 a month for your first 50 subscribers with no transaction fees. Starter is $99 a month plus 1.49% and 19¢ per transaction, and Plus is $499 plus 1.34% and 19¢. 60-day free trial. It was the most common subscription app in our scan, on 22 of 60 brands (37%). The percent fee grows with every sale.

4. Seal, Skio, Loop, and more

  • Seal (4.9 stars from 3,126 reviews, Built for Shopify): free for up to 50 subscriptions, then paid plans from $5.95 a month. The only subscription app in Store Leads' top ten for coffee and tea stores. See the listing.
  • Skio (5.0 stars from 242 reviews): now "Skio, a Recharge Company." The Scale plan is $599 a month plus 1% and 20¢ per transaction. See the listing.
  • Loop (5.0 stars from 779 reviews): free for 50 active subscriptions, then $99 a month plus 1%. See the listing.
  • Easy Subscriptions (5.0 stars from 214 reviews, Built for Shopify): free for your first 100 lifetime subscription orders, then $39 a month. See the listing. Recurpay (5.0 stars from 571 reviews): from $9 a month. See the listing.

The discount question. There is no single right number. Work it out: price × (1 − discount) − your costs. On an $18 bag, 10% off is $16.20, a $1.80 give-up on every order. Offer your bigger discount where it buys you something, like a longer cycle or a 2-pound bag. Compare fees at your size in best Shopify subscription apps.

Subscriptions and sampler boxes can clash. Shopify's own Subscriptions app does not work with bundles: "Bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app" (Shopify Help Center). If you want a subscribable sampler, pick a third-party subscription app that supports build-a-box and test it first.

Best Apps for Sampler Boxes and Build-a-Box

A sampler is how new customers find a favorite. "Pick any 3 of 9" or "build a four-roast flight" lets shoppers choose, and it lifts order size.

  • Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app): mix and match plus a bundle builder, $14.99 a month. See the listing.
  • Kefi Product Bundle Builder: 5.0 stars from 152 reviews, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month for stores up to 50 orders a month. Build-a-box, mix and match, and multi-step bundles. See the listing.
  • Easy Bundles: Bundle Builder: 4.9 stars from 1,379 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free up to $500 in bundle sales a month. See the listing.
  • Easify Box Bundle Builder BYOB (a box-builder page with single or multi-step flows) and Simple Bundles & Kits (a free plan with build-your-own bundles). Easify listing · Simple Bundles listing.

3 of the 60 brands we checked load a Gift Box builder, and 2 load GiftNote, a gift-message tool. We found no verified data on gifting season for coffee and tea, so check your own November and December orders last year. For gift wrap and notes, see adding gift wrap in the cart and order notes in the cart drawer. More build-a-box options: mix and match bundle apps.

Tea Brands: What Changes

Tea is not coffee with a different label. The Tea Association of the USA says some 160 million Americans drink tea on a given day, and 75% to 80% of the tea consumed in America is iced (2024 data). That makes iced and cold-brew formats a real product line.

  • Bag math is easy. One tea bag makes one cup, so a 20-bag box lasts 10 days at two cups a day. For loose leaf, divide the grams in the tin by the grams per cup, then by cups a day.
  • Samplers are the growth tool. "Pick any 3 of 9 teas" works well in a build-a-box app. See sampler boxes.
  • Add-ons fit naturally. Infusers, tins, and mugs make good cart add-ons.
  • The coffee freshness window is about coffee. Show a best-by or harvest date on tea, and do not borrow the three-week claim.
  • Tea has its own rule risk. California's coffee-only Prop 65 rule does not cover tea. See the rules.

Best Review Apps for Coffee and Tea

Taste is personal, so reviews carry weight. 33 of the 60 brands we checked (55%) load a review app we could detect. For the full field, see best Shopify review apps.

  • Judge.me: 5.0 stars from 48,044 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free forever, with photo and video reviews. It was the top review app on 11 of 60 brands, and Store Leads puts it on 24.2% of all coffee and tea stores. See the listing.
  • Junip: 4.8 stars from 1,159 reviews, Built for Shopify. Free with unlimited orders and review requests. See the listing.
  • Okendo: 4.8 stars from 1,426 reviews, no Built for Shopify badge. Free up to 50 orders a month, then $19 and up. It ran on 9 of the 60 brands. See the listing.

Tip: add a question about taste, like "How would you describe the flavor?" or "How did you brew it?" That helps the next shopper more than a star rating. Ask every buyer, and do not hide the bad reviews.

Best Email, SMS, and Quiz Apps for Coffee and Tea

5. Klaviyo: refill flows timed to the bag clock

4.7 stars from 3,354 reviews. No Built for Shopify badge. See the listing. It was the most common tool in our scan, on 51 of 60 brands (85%). Email is free for up to 250 contacts, and SMS is free for up to 150 credits. For the full field, see best email marketing apps for Shopify.

In Klaviyo's 2026 benchmarks for Food & Beverage, flows had a 2.46% placed-order rate and campaigns had 0.26%. By our math, that is about nine times more orders per recipient from flows (Klaviyo). How to build the refill flow (from Klaviyo's replenishment guide):

  1. Start the flow when a bag ships.
  2. Wait about 80% of the days the bag lasts. Klaviyo's example is a reminder about 25 days after a 30-day purchase. For a 12-ounce bag and a two-cup drinker, that is around day 10.
  3. Send two reminders, then one more after the cycle has passed with a small extra.
  4. Make one flow for each bag size.

Small stores cannot use Klaviyo's "expected next order" prediction yet. It needs at least 500 customers who have placed an order and 180 days of order history (Klaviyo Help Center). Until then, set the timing from the bag clock. No Klaviyo? Reorder Reminder Pro (5.0 stars from 1 review, very new) sends reorder reminder emails timed to each customer's purchase, and its listing names coffee. See the listing.

6. Postscript and Attentive: text marketing

Postscript (4.7 stars from 1,207 reviews): free to install, with a $49 monthly minimum spend on the Starter plan. It ran on 6 of the 60 stores, and Attentive ran on 7. See the listing. A text like "Your beans run out in 3 days. Reorder?" fits SMS well. Get clear consent first.

7. RevenueHunt: a "which coffee is for me?" quiz

4.9 stars from 459 reviews. Built for Shopify. See the listing. Free up to 100 quiz responses a month, then $39 for 500. 11 of the 60 brands load a quiz tool. A taste quiz that ends with "start with this roast, in this grind" helps new buyers choose, and it makes your first sampler easy to sell.

Loyalty and the Second Order

16 of the 60 stores (27%) run a loyalty app: Yotpo Loyalty on 8, Smile on 4, and Rivo on 3.

For Roasters: Schedules, Stock, and Roast Dates

  • Roasting schedules. Roasterly (5.0 stars from 6 reviews, $19.95 a month, 21-day trial) turns Shopify orders into roasting schedules with weight-based roasting. It is young, so read its reviews first. See the listing.
  • Roast date and tasting notes. Coffeefy says it is built for specialty coffee brands and helps you turn your coffee into a story customers can taste. It had no reviews when we checked (launched October 2025). See the listing. You can also show the roast date with a product field you fill in for each batch.
  • Shared stock across sizes and grinds. See the base-product method in the grind section.
  • Delivery estimates. Estimated Delivery Date (4.9 stars from 511 reviews) shows delivery estimates on product, cart, and checkout pages. Free for up to 100 ETA views. See the listing.

Not roasting yourself? Private-label and dropship coffee is a different job from this guide. Apps for it include Dripshipper, Roastify, YourBeans, and Cerca. Dripshipper · Roastify · YourBeans · Cerca. Once you sell bags, the apps in this guide apply.

The Food and Subscription Rules Most App Lists Skip

These are the simple, checkable rules that touch a coffee or tea store. This is not legal advice.

1. FDA food facility registration (renew by December 31, 2026)

  • Who must register: the owner or operator of a facility that makes, processes, packs, or holds food for people in the US, unless an exemption applies (21 CFR 1.225).
  • The retail exemption: a "retail food establishment" sells food directly to consumers as its main job. Its test is that yearly sales to consumers are greater than yearly sales to all other buyers, and "consumers" does not include businesses (21 CFR 1.227).
  • What about online-only? FDA's own question and answer asks whether a seller who ships to consumers by internet or mail is a retail food establishment. Its answer is "Maybe" (FDA Q&A). If most of your sales go to shoppers, you may qualify. If you sell more to cafés and offices, you probably need to register.
  • The deadline: every two years, between October 1 and December 31, registrants must renew. FDA says it will treat a registration as expired if the facility fails to renew by December 31, 2026. There is no fee (FDA, September 29, 2026). If you import tea or green coffee, FDA also needs advance notice of each shipment, called Prior Notice.

2. Labels and claims

  • Nutrition label: FDA's rule exempts foods with "insignificant amounts" of the listed nutrients. Its examples include "coffee beans (whole or ground), tea leaves, plain unsweetened instant coffee and tea." The catch: the food must carry no nutrition claims or other nutrition information, so a "low calorie" line can cost you the exemption. Sweetened and flavored blends are not covered by that example (21 CFR 101.9(j)(4)).
  • Organic: a business with $5,000 or less in yearly organic sales is exempt from certification. Above that, you generally need to be certified (7 CFR 205.101).
  • Fair Trade: Fair Trade USA says brands and traders "get a Fair Trade license." Check with them before you use the claim (Fair Trade USA).
  • "Recyclable" and "compostable": "recyclable" can go unqualified only when recycling reaches at least 60 percent of consumers, and "compostable" needs competent and reliable scientific evidence (16 CFR 260.12). That matters for pods and bags.

3. California Prop 65: coffee is special, tea is not

  • California wrote a rule just for coffee. It says exposures to cancer-listed chemicals in coffee that are "created by and inherent in the processes of roasting coffee beans or brewing coffee" do not pose a significant risk of cancer. It became operative on October 1, 2019 (27 CCR 25704). The rule's text says coffee. It does not mention tea.
  • Tea sellers should watch for metals such as lead. A chemical counts as "naturally occurring" only to the extent it "did not result from any known human activity" (27 CCR 25501). Test your tea, keep the records, or warn. Prop 65 applies to businesses with 10 or more employees.

4. Subscriptions and reviews

  • Federal law (ROSCA): disclose all material terms before you take billing details, get the buyer's express informed consent, and give a simple way to stop the charges (15 U.S.C. 8403).
  • California (AB 2863, since July 1, 2025): get express consent, keep proof for three years or one year after the contract ends (whichever is longer), let people cancel the same way they signed up, and send an annual reminder. It also covers free-to-paid offers (Barnes & Thornburg).
  • The FTC "click-to-cancel" rule: a court threw out the 2024 version on July 8, 2025. In March 2026 the FTC asked for public comment on whether to write a new one, which is an early notice and not a proposed rule. We found no proposed rule as of October 6, 2026 (Federal Register). ROSCA and the FTC Act still apply.
  • Reviews: the FTC's reviews rule took effect October 21, 2024. The maximum penalty is $53,088 per violation, and the FTC said in September 2026 that it will keep the 2025 amounts for 2026 (16 CFR 1.98).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Shopify apps for coffee brands?

Six jobs, six picks. Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell (our app: 4.9 stars, Built for Shopify, from $9.99 a month) lifts order value with add-ons and shipping goals. Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app) or Kaching Bundles handle "buy 3, save 10%." Appstle or Recharge handle subscriptions, Easify or Qikify handle grind size, Judge.me handles reviews, and Klaviyo handles refill emails. Do the bag math first.

What apps do big coffee and tea brands use on Shopify?

We checked 60 coffee and tea brands on Shopify on October 6, 2026. Klaviyo ran on 51. 41 had a named subscription app, led by Recharge (22) and Ordergroove (8). Gorgias ran on 19, Rebuy on 13, Judge.me on 11, and Okendo on 9. A new shop does not need the full stack.

Which Shopify app shows "buy 3, save 10%" on a coffee product page?

Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB (our app, 4.9 stars from 13 reviews, $14.99 a month), Kaching Bundles (5.0 stars from 6,178 reviews), P: Quantity Breaks & Bundles (4.9 stars from 264 reviews, free plan), and Moon Bundles (5.0 stars from 664 reviews, free plan) all show quantity-break messaging on the product page. Size the ladder to the bags a household uses in about three weeks.

Do quantity breaks and build-a-box samplers work with subscribe and save on Shopify?

It depends on your apps, so test one full order and one renewal before launch. Shopify says bundles are not compatible with its own Subscriptions app, so a subscribable sampler needs a third-party subscription app that supports build-a-box, such as Skio, Loop, Appstle, or Easy Subscriptions. Paid plans list bundle or tiered-discount tools, such as Appstle Business, Loop Starter, and Recharge Plus.

How long does a 12-ounce bag of coffee last, and how often should a subscription ship?

By our math, using 13 grams of coffee for an 8-ounce cup, a 12-ounce bag lasts about 26 days for one cup a day, 13 days for two, and 9 days for three. A lighter dose or smaller cups stretches it. Offer day-based cycles like 7, 10, 14, 21, and 28 days, and ask "How many cups a day?" at signup.

How do I offer grind size without 100 variants?

Keep roast and bag size as variants so each has its own stock count, and add grind as a product page field with an options app such as Easify or Qikify Custom Product Options. Shopify now allows 2,048 variants per product but still only three options, and every variant carries its own inventory. Your packing team must read the grind field on each order.

How do I build a tea sampler box on Shopify?

Use a build-a-box app, such as Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB, Kefi, Easy Bundles, or Simple Bundles & Kits. Let shoppers pick a set number of teas, such as any 3 of 9, and set a bundle price. One tea bag makes one cup, so it is easy to say how long each box lasts.

What is a good free shipping threshold for a coffee store?

Set it so the goal lands at 2 to 3 bags. With an $18 bag, a $45 goal means the third bag ships free after a 10% break ($48.60). On USPS list rates, postage is about 46% of a one-bag order but 25% of a three-bag order (our math), so a shipping goal and a quantity break work well together.

What discount should I offer on a coffee subscription, and what about failed payments?

There is no single right number. Work out price × (1 − discount) minus your costs. On an $18 bag, 10% off is $16.20. For failed payments, Appstle lists payment retry on its free plan, Recharge lists Failed Payment Recovery, Loop lists dunning with 15 retries, and Skio lists Smart Payment Recovery.

Do I need to register my roastery with FDA?

Maybe. A facility that makes, packs, or holds food for US consumers must register unless it is exempt. A retail food establishment is exempt, and FDA's test is whether yearly sales directly to consumers exceed sales to all other buyers. FDA's own Q&A answers "Maybe" for internet sellers. If you sell more wholesale than direct, register. Registration is free, and registrations not renewed by December 31, 2026 expire.

Do I need a Prop 65 warning or a nutrition label for coffee and tea?

For coffee, California's rule says cancer-listed chemicals created by roasting or brewing do not pose a significant risk, so roasters need no warning for those. The text does not cover tea, so tea sellers should test for metals such as lead and keep records, or warn. On labels, FDA exempts whole or ground coffee beans, tea leaves, and plain unsweetened instant coffee and tea, as long as the food carries no nutrition claims.

What Shopify app should a coffee shop (café) use?

This guide is about selling bags, tins, and boxes online. Cafés that serve drinks need point-of-sale and mobile-ordering software instead, such as POS Cafe or Zapiet Eats. Once your café also ships bags, the apps in this guide apply.

What to Do This Week

  1. Today: work out the bag clock for your two best-selling sizes. Write down how many days each lasts for one, two, and three cups a day.
  2. This week: change your subscription cycles to match. If you roast and sell wholesale, check your FDA registration before December 31.
  3. Next: add one cart upsell, a free-shipping goal at the 2-to-3 bag mark, and a quantity break sized to the freshness window.
  4. Then: watch average order value for two weeks, and change one offer at a time.

Want the cart upsells and shipping goal handled? Oxify Cart Drawer & Upsell has a 14-day free trial and a 30-day ROI guarantee: if your average order value has not increased within 30 days of going live, we refund 100% of what you paid. Want "buy 3, save 10%" and sampler boxes? Try Oxify Quantity Breaks & BYOB. See how the cart app works on our cart drawer upsell page.
